Linear vs. Non Linear Time

Title: Evil-Natured

I worked on the sound clip before shooting the video. I edited it through Premiere from the original sound piece (the opening of Beethoven’s Für Elise played using Garageband on the laptop). The sound piece itself has linear and non linear parts. For the linear part, I made it darker and darker as the time goes. I repeated twice the beginning part which is relatively brighter for making this clip non linear.

This progressively dark and deep sound piece brought me the image of the scene of the underwater. Therefore, I made the story board about a child playing with a rubber duck but then torturing it. The story is based on the theory that human nature is fundamentally evil. With the sound piece, I repeated the starting scene as well.

<Rough story board>

The video is shot by a waterproof camera.

William Kentridge "The Refusal Of Time"

William Kentridge's "The Refusal of Time" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

This exhibition is composed by sounded five-channel video and the actual installation of pumping pistons; the five projected videos are surrounding the machine. These components interact each other with sound. The videos consist of various methods such as drawing, film, shadows, and pieces of papers.
The  five different channels act as one huge video creating the space for the audience and the installation. This is because we can watch the flow of the video from side to side.
The real machine in the middle of the space made me think as the audience was a part of the exhibition while the machine itself appeared in the video.
The exhibition satisfied me with the sound, the diverse videos and the big moving installation. Especially, the video clips of numerous methods motivated me in a sense of exploration.

Memento

Memento was made by a well-known film director Christopher Nolan in 2000 and its genre is thriller and mystery. This film is about a man who has a short-term memory loss. He tries to resolve the mystery around him by tattooing himself the essential information to remind himself.

This movie is famous especially because of its original editing techniques. The rearrangement of the plot strongly drags audience’s attention. The past time scenes alternate with ones of the present time. The rewinding scene from the beginning also stands out well. After watching the film, we can notice the beginning was following the last scene. These labyrinth-like plot make audience focus on the film from the beginning to the end. I was one of the audience who enjoyed this film because of such editing.

I, however, didn’t like the main character who ends the film with his self-destruction. I understand such memory loss could make him distrust anything. Nevertheless, it was disturbing to see such person who imprisons himself without any self-development and keep wallowing in self-pity.

Bansky’s Exit through the Gift Shop

This documentary film made by a famous street artist Bansky tells about Thierry Guetta's growth process of becoming a street artist Mr.Brainwash from a gift shopkeeper. Most footages in this film are from the video filmed by Thierry's private camera.

It contains different street artists' interviews, their art works and the process as well. Because it is in the form of documentary, there is the narration with a serious tone. Bansky was anonymously interviewed for many times. And as this documentary is about Thierry, this shows him since the year of 1999 from the extract of his private videos and has a lot of his interviews. At the end of this film, it shows the recent situations of the whole cast. These elements make the documentary believable.

On the contrary, the elements which makes people doubt the reliability of this film is particularly when Thierry went to the amusement park to film Bansky’s piece. Even though he said in the film that he removed all the files in his camera in front of the police, we could still see the scene of it.
